dogs • plastic • bags

Look for biodegradable doggie poop bags for cleaning up after your pooch. There's a lot to clean up after over the life time of your dog. Help it all return to earth faster by avoiding non-biodegradable plastic baggies.

water • conservation • energy • emissions

Many of us use very large capacity water tanks to flush our toilets. One way to quickly and easily save water is to put one or two bricks inside the tank. Saving a half-gallon of water EVERY time you flush will save money in energy used to treat and clean the water, and it will keep the associated CO2 emissions from polluting our atmosphere.

cars • driving • gas • tires

Keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. It's also safer, and will make your tires last longer (which ultimately results in less waste).

toothbrush • recycle • plastic

Check out the products at Preserve Products and pick up some toothbrushes made from recycled plastic. And then, when you're done using them, you can send them back to Preserve Products, in the packaging they provided when they shipped them to you, and they will recycle your toothbrushes, to give them yet another life!

recycle

When you go to a fast food restaurant, think twice about the trash you throw away. A lot of the containers you get your food in can be recycled. Ask for a bag, and bring home any recyclables to throw in your recycling bin at home.

plastic • bags • recycle

Check with your local grocery store to see if they recycle plastic bags. Most do these days, and even if you use re-usable shopping bags for your grocery shopping, you can bring in other types of plastic bags like ziplock bags or other bags used for food packaging to be recycled instead of just adding more plastic to the landfills.

water • washing

When you are washing your hands, don't leave the water running. Since you should be scrubbing your hands long enough to be able to sing the ABC song, that's a long time to leave the water running, especially if you aren't actively using it. Turn it off after you wet your hands, and back on when you're ready to rinse. You'll save a lot of water.

coffee • paper • starbucks

If you plan to drink your coffee at Starbucks, tell the barista that it's "for here." They'll put it in a mug for you rather than a paper cup.

cars • soap

Try using your eco-friendly dishwashing soap to wash your car since the runoff goes right into the ground. I tried it the other day to wash off all the sand and salt from winter, and it worked great.

I read the other day that a single printing of the New York Times uses about 70,000 trees. Time to go digital if you haven't already. Get your news online, use your phone, or try an Amazon Kindle.
